This Mom Needs Help for Halloween! I'm supposed to be Hawk Girl!

Me Ra Koh

Blaze is going to be Batman.

Pascaline is going to be Poison Ivy.

Brian found an old suit and purple shirt at the second hand store. He’s going to be the Joker.

And Mom, mom is supposed to be Hawk Girl. Oh boy. I need help!

How do I make a costume to represent myself as Hawk Girl from the Justice League?

That is her on the far right. HELP! 🙂

She wears a yellow strapless top which I’m not totally up for with how cold it is here. 🙂 And then she has these huge wings. I feel like all thumbs when it comes to craftiness like that. Any ideas? Anyone!

“Why Hawk Girl?” you ask. Since Blaze was 3 yrs. old he has called me his Hawk Girl. The whole first year I thought he was saying “Hot Girl”. 🙂 I loved it! Then Pascaline and dad informed me of the Justice League and the actual hero named Hawk Girl. That’s the why. 🙂

Here’s the deal…

If you give me some good ideas on what kind of costume to make as Hawk Girl, I’ll post the my Top Six Poses for Seniors Portraits today! At 1pm! 🙂

Advise away friends!

Hm. Well, green tights for sure. And a thick black belt with a silver (tinfoil?) oval buckle… the mask could be fun. I’m betting it’ll be easy to find a generic black mask that you can then cover with some of that craft foam that comes in sheets of different colors. It can be cut with scissors, painted on, glued on… the possibilities are endless! The wings….. I don’t know about the wings!

And as far as the halter… it can always be covered with a makeshift Hawk Cape, right? (Anyone concerned with authenticity must live in a warmer climate… 🙂

  2. Lauren says:

Her…mace thing could be pretty easy to make, too. You could always wear a long-sleeve v-neck gold top instead of the halter.

Are you going to use temporary spray hair color in your hair?

Most costume shops will sell large wings, and I’ve seen them in both black and white, sometimes there are reds too. I’m sure it’d be cheaper to buy a pair of black feather angel wings than to try and figure out what you need to make them and then buying all the materials.

Can’t wait to see a family Halloween picture! Hubby is going as an airplane crash victim (well, the dead pilot, actually!). He’s even got a real oxygen mask out of an airplane he’s going to wear with an old pilot uniform he doesn’t use anymore. It should be cool. My 11 year old stepson wants to be a ghoul/ghost/zombie/corpse/something dead. I’m going as a safari tour guide (complete with pith helmet and binoculars) and my baby girl is going as a hippo!

    If you have a
walmart nearby, my 22yr old daughter got some great wings last year to be a green fairy really cheap….also you could wear a “hippie” type top in yellow or goldish with a cape, maybe gray to keep you warm….or use some grey fleece hot glued onto wire shaped like wings and attach them using elastic head bands(thin ones)cut and sewn to attach to you like a backpack. Then black leggings with painted green stripes down the leg and red garden boots or spats over a pair of black boots, and a wide black or red belt. For the mask why not get a regular black mask and hot glue some feathers sticking out, and don’t forget the red lipstick!

  4. Brooke says:

You could make the giant wings out of cardboard and spraypaint them silver outline details with a black sharpie (if that is the color) buy some elastic and hot glue it on, or staple to the cardboard so you have a way to keep it on. Doesnt sound pretty but you could make it pretty! You could wear a tan shirt/sweater and buy some felt the color of the top and just stitch it on the sweater (the sweater suppose to resemble skin color).

  5. J.P. says:

I think beck nailed the mask with the generic mask + craft foam idea. (Red craft foam would also be great for the wings on the boots.)

For wings, I’ve seen kites that look like birds used to great effect when attached to the back. They’re cheap and lightweight.

For the top, maybe this in champagne over a white or tan long-sleeve top?

  6. Denise says:

omg, mera! Please please please if you read this, post the senior thing at noon! I am leaving at 1230 for my very first senior portrait session ever and I am soooo nervous! I have NO ideas and I’ve spent hours preparing.

As far as the costume, I saw some pretty cool black feather wings at savers the other day. They were like, $5.00 – do you have savers where you live?

As far as the rest of it – I think the mask will reall make the outfit – Other than that, anything red, yellow and black would probably do – since its cold there, youll have to tell blaze that there is no way youre running around in a leotard!! Post some photos of all of you all dressed up!!

  7. Kim says:

There are lots of great ideas already, but here is another one for the wings. You could use wire coat hangers or other wire to form the outline for the wings and cover them with flowing, lightweight silver fabric in layers. It would be light weight and have a little movement when you walked. The black mask with black craft feathers glued on would look the best I think and it looks like she has black feather dangle earrings. Any black belt you have would work, just add a silver buckle made from aluminum foil. Her weapon could be a foam ball and dowel spray painted silver.

Good Luck! How fun to have a family theme.

  8. Pam says:

Me Ra, I taught elementary art & had kids make the wire hanger wings. They are sooo cool. We used old nylons and painted them. I also made a similar mask two years ago. I cut out floppy cardboard into the shape I wanted & decorated (I used bright orange & red leaves to be a bird from fall, they looked like feathers! I used elasticky string to make it fit snug, but able to be pulled off. I think you should do all SPANDEX!!! Put layers underneath if it is cold, then find a gold thing to go over black spandex. Make it a tiny bit sexy, she looks too good to waste this costume opportunity. Go for it!

  9. steph says:

    Mera,
Us Washington gals no how to be prepared for crummy weather! I suggest any fitted gold shirt, even a fitted turtleneck will work and will keep you cozy! I think that if you can pull off the green leotard and the red swim suit bottoms then you will be GOOD TO GO! Oh what a cool costume this will be!

  10. Kelli Kalish says:

    Mera,

The wings? Get an OVERSIZED moving box, open it up flat on the ground…trace or draw huge wings( you may need two boxes)..hardware store or craft stores sell the spray paint..silver right? I am not sure what size box but I use the ones that the boys can make forts out of..usually the biggest they have. Then punch holes in each one so that you can run string or a belt …something that will hold them together..also holes for straps on your shoulders..you could even do holes in and around your waist area ( on the boxes of course) so that you could give the wings extra hold..that’s it..cardboard..spray paint..string or belt material…you’re good to go..you have to do those wings justice…they make the outfit..as does the mask ..hope this all helps!

  11. Bree says:

Wow… that’s tricky. I would make the wings out of cardboard (using elastic to secure it to my back). if you sew, then the clothing part shouldn’t be too hard. I would cut a hold in the crotch of a pair of old nude nylons and then cut off the feet. Then you can wear that as a “shirt”, with your arms using the legs as sleeves. The elastic waist can help support your chest too. Then just sew a basic “corset” top out of gold fabric and sew the corset to the nylons. If you want to make the costume your own, you could try doing a short red mini skirt instead of the red diaper thing, and then wear green tights under it. Just wear any old knee high boots. Then for the mask – that is tough. I would make it out of cardboard as well. Fasten some elastic on it so that it can come on and off easily. Good luck!

  12. Megan says:

I’m thinking felt cut outs sewn up the top with an elastic strap on the bottom to hold them on over shoes would be good. With felt you can make the dramatic angle cut.
Don’t know if I like the cardboard ideas- maybe feather white wings with grey spray paint? Not sure how that would go though.

  13. Kate says:

LOL, can’t wait to see picks. We used to think my son was saying “Hot girl” too. LOL so funny. We have a family theme as well. Star Wars. Should be very interesting. I am Princess Leia (not gold bikini, heck NO!), Hubby is Obi-won, and my 3 year old son is Clone Trooper.

  14. Harmony says:

I say you just go as “Hot Girl” (although that might involve a sleeveless top too!) Woooohoooooo!! 😉

  15. Me Ra says:

Hilarious Harmony! You crack me up!

  16. Michelle says:

I was just at Party City and they had really nice, big black wings. I saw them and thought of you. 🙂
