Day One, by Pascaline

Day 1

by Pascaline

Today I saw a monkey.

It had an owee.

My mom had no clothes on

but had her camera.

When the monkey was here.

To say our first day was an adventure…would quite frankly be an understatement. I think Pascaline’s journal entry is classic. I know, the whole “mom had no clothes on but had her camera” deserves some explanation…or does it? :) But this little monkey incident happened in the afternoon, we can’t skip the earlier parts of our first full day!

First of all, sleeping in the jungle our first night went better than Brian and I had expected. The kids both stayed in their beds to our surprise. All but Blaze, stayed awake with our eyes wide open at every little sound we heard in the jungle around us. Lots of foreign sounds at night. Lots of things that make you start to wonder about the fact that all our doors, walls and windows are wide open. That thin little mosquito net over the bed suddenly feels very, very thin. And yet, Blaze sleeps like a champ.

By 6:30am, we were all awake and out of bed. The jungle starts singing their good morning chorus at 5am, so 6:30am is sleeping in around here. Crazy, huh! It’s like a HUGE canopy of wildlife wants to say good morning all at once! How can you not wake up and greet them back?

By 7am, we spotted our first monkeys in the cliffs off our back deck! What a treat for the kids on our first day!

On our walk home from breakfast, the monkeys had come off the cliffs and were now in the trees above our heads. Blaze was wishing they were even closer, but I was thinking this was a great distance!

We packed up our stuff and headed to the beach for our first swim. An hour into it, a jelly fish wrapped one of its tentacles around Pascaline’s elbow. Her elbow started to swell up. A local woman ran to the bushes, grabbed a bunch of leaves, crushed them into a green paste and packed it on her elbow. Within 15 minutes the pasty green mask had reduced the swelling and sting! We decided this experience deserved coconut shakes.

After the shakes, the kids and I headed back to the house. We all got in our favorite place, the outdoor shower, and could not stop laughing. It felt so good to cool off! The kids were being so cute that I stepped out and grabbed my camera. (This is where the explanation comes in. :) ) As I was taking pictures of the kids, Blaze says, “Mama, there’s a monkey behind you on the deck.” I didn’t really take it seriously because he said it with this tone that sounds similar to “Mama, can you buy me more crayons tomorrow.” No real inflection in the voice, just stating something like it is.

And then comes Pascaline’s shrill, “MAMA, FOR REAL! THE MONKEY IS RIGHT BEHIND YOU!”

Brian gets home at this very second, tells me to take a picture since I’m standing their naked, in shock, BUT still holding the camera. I take the picture just before it’s to late.

Then the monkey slips away with part of our watermelon.

Not even a hour later, the monkey is back. The owee on his arm isn’t looking too good. And this time, he has snuck past me taking a nap and is in the room where the kids are napping. (I can just see my mom and dad freaking out as they read this. :) ) And guess how I knew the monkey had snuck in the kid’s room (which is also the kitchen), Blaze–in his unamused, droll tone, said, “Mama, the monkey is in our room.”

Now the funny thing is that during breakfast that day, Blaze broke down into tears b/c of all the little flies buzzing around him. When Blaze was around 18 months old, Pascaline thought it’d be funny if she could make Blaze afraid of flies. So every time a fly got through our screen door, she’d start screaming–then laughing. But the screaming made quite the impression. And now, as you may have guessed, Blaze is afraid of flies. It’s ridiculous, and we’re hoping Thailand breaks this fear once and for all. So back to the monkey sneaking in their room. Blaze, as usual, not afraid at all. Almost unamused. But if a fly had flown in…look out!

I try to scare the monkey off, and he looks at me like I’m stupid. Brian shows up and gives it a try. Off the monkey goes. Apparently, you have to act like a bigger and crazier monkey to scare them away. (We all know Brian has this down!)

Now, is that a first day or WHAT?! :)

Sitting in the longtail boat with our kids by our side, going back to the dream world Brian and I discovered last year, is surreal!

Arrival_DayOne_Thai09-0236a.jpg

I think I’m in shock that we’re actually here. And not only here for 10 days, but a couple months! We’ve never done any thing like this before. It’s hard to even know what to expect, and yet, we’re here!

It’s hard to tell what the kids think by their faces in this shot–especially Blaze. :)

We’ll show you the back deck eating area and homeschool zone later. And our most favorite spot is the open aired shower! Pictures of that will come later too! But for now, this gives you a little peak!

And that is our first “official” blog post from the Jungle! Upload time is a little slow, but hopefully you all get this!

En Route to Thailand!

How do you dress when your going to spend two months in the jungles of Thailand?

A pair of shorts, one light sweatshirt for the whole trip, Tevas for the kids and Chacos for me and Brian. (These are only shoes for the whole trip!)

What do you pack?

Two big backpacks that fits all our clothes, swimsuits and toiletries, a small back pack on each kid for their toys and blankie, one bag that has a “heck of a lot” of camera gear, and one more bag of all our homeschool stuff! Are you impressed! We didn’t check a single thing!

After an eleven hour flight, we are now in Seoul, Korea. The kids didn’t sleep a wink. It’s 2am for us, but daylight outside. So you guessed it, the kids are running EVERY WHERE with TONS of ENDLESS energy!

Already, this trip has turned into an adventure, and we’re only half way to Thailand! My favorite part so far is when we boarded the plane in Seattle, and I started my period. (sorry boys, close your ears if you must–this woman needs to rant!)

Now ladies, I ask you…Why ON EARTH, would I start my period a week early, and of all times, start as I’m getting on the plane with a hurking, huge backpack on me, a #@$ load of homeschool books in tow behind me and two kids who keep dropping fries throughout the plane? Why on earth, would life think this is a good time to start my period! Ladies, help me out here!

But aside from that surprise, the flight was pretty amazing. Kids did awesome. Asiana Airlines has the most room I have ever seen! We had a row of six seats to ourselves to spread out. Pascaline figured every part of the TV, movies and games there was to figure out.

It was awesome.

We have a short layover in Korea, and the kids are so excited to just be in KOREA–where papa is from! We won’t be able to leave the airport, but they are mesmerized with their roots by seeing Koreans everywhere! And we got to order fresh kim-bap (Korean style sushi) which was actually my treat more than any thing. :)

In about an hour we board our next flight and head to Bangkok. We’ll arrive in Bangkok at midnight, and I have no idea what it will be our time. :) We’ll sleep in a hotel near the airport and then Monday morning, wake up and get on our last plane to go south–we will have been traveling since Saturday! Isn’t that crazy? Then we find a long tail boat and make the 30-40 minute boat ride to our home for the next two months! Can’t wait to have photos up on the blog of our little Thai style jungle house!

This last pic’ is for grammie! Blazey finally wanted to get his haircut this last week. Still grieving a little. Yep, his shirt says “lover boy”. He wanted to get that shirt b/c he said he’s my lover boy. :)

Okay, we’re boarding!

p.s. Mom, we made it safe to Korea and the kids all say hi to you and papa! They are so excited to be in Korea! You would crack up at the energy that is giving them! Shae, sorry I didn’t call you back in time, I’m a BAD sister! :)

The TOP ELEVEN Highlights to WPPI 2009!

1. Reunion Time!

We’ve gone to WPPI for the last three years, and every year it feels like a bigger and better reunion with friends you only see once a year. My dear friend, Sara France, and the awesome Robert Evans, hosted the best Photography Mentor/GOBee Bag party yet! It was Sunday night, and the BEST way to kick of the whole tradeshow week! Thanks you two for all the hard work that goes into throwing such a great party! And thanks for making it open to so many people. The heart of you two is always wanting to invite people in, and it’s a very cool thing! Check out Robert’s Photography Mentor site and Sara’s NEW, AWESOME blog!

2. Master Class Blast!

Our Master Class on Photo Coaching was a BLAST! Bronson took a ton of images that I haven’t even had a chance to look at, but I’ll post some up soon. We had a full class, and the energy in the room was awesome! Thanks to every one who signed up for our Master Class. It was a honor to spend those hours with you! So many of you approached us over the next two days and thanked us for the class. Your feedback meant the world! Thank you!! I also have to do a special SHOUT OUT to Roxie at Pixel 2 Canvas! She and Curt made these AMAZING canvases of our work and a HUGE, beautiful banner outside our door.

The whole thing looked amazing! Roxie, send me our photo so I can post it up here! Thank you to Pixel 2 Canvas from the bottom of our heart! (And thanks to the lovely ladies who helped in the background! You three were dolls!)

3. Stealing the Mic!

Tuesday afternoon, Brian and I did a talk at the Pictage booth with Denis Reggie.

For those of you who don’t know, Denis Reggie has been a hero to us since we first took his workshop in the early days (amazing workshop for wedding photographers). To be invited to speak with Denis was a wonderful honor. (but I soon realized that I had to GRAB the microphone from the man to get a word in edge wise! :) ) Thanks to Mike in Hawaii from Mango Tree Photography for capturing this great image!

4. Heartfelt Dinner

Later that night we had a special dinner with a handful of Pictage leaders. Half way through the dinner, I convinced Mike Colon to switch places with me at the table so I could get to know Joe Buissink better. Joe’s work astounds me and Brian. His images leave us breathless. But his passion for photography is what moves me the most. I lucked out b/c Mike switched places, and I had the most wonderful, heartfelt conversation with Joe. We talked about all the things that are closest to my heart when it comes to being an artist; how do we build more confidence, how does our pain in life affect our art, and a few other wonderful conversations that I’ll share at our Discovery Workshop. Joe, thank you for sharing your heart. My time with you was a definite, unexpected highlight to our week!

5. Brian doing the River Dance!

Pictage hosted a HUGE party at Studio 54 (or 59?) late Tuesday night. I pretty much walked in and in 15 minutes had to turn around and walk out. It was the craziest experience b/c I felt so dizzy inside the club (and I wasn’t drinking :) ). I think my Audio Deficit Disorder played into it b/c my equilibrium was thrown completely off that we had to head out. The moment we walked out the door, and the music was gone, I had my sense of balance back. So Me Ra learned something new. She can’t hang out in loud, and I mean SUPER loud, dance clubs. :) Since the night was young, Brian and I joined up with Airika and Gerald Pope and Katie and Chris Torres and found ourselves at the Nine Fine Irishmen pub where they had a Irish band performing. Brian, being an expert River Dancer (as many of you have come to realize, Brian is an expert on just about every thing), did his river dance with Chris! That was a definite HIGHLIGHT for me. ;)

6. Jeramy and Sharon Showed UP!

Right before WPPI, Jeramy (our token male commenter :) ), emailed us and said he and Sharon were coming to WPPI for the first day! Brian and I were so excited to see them! But we didn’t get done with our speaking sessions and appointments until almost 9:30pm. When we got up to our room that night, we called Jeramy and Sharon. They had changed into their PJ’s and opened a bottle of wine. We asked them if they were up to meeting us for dessert, and so awesome, they totally ditched the bottle of wine and had dessert with us! I laughed so hard that night I almost wet my pants! Thanks you two for coming out! We are so glad we got some time with you both!

7. Workshop Ladies Going for It!

Brian and I also ran into a handful of ladies from our San Diego workshop! These beautiful ladies all came to WPPI together and were having a BLAST! Some of them showed me their photography since they did our workshop, and I was speechless. Totally speechless! I’m so proud of you ladies! And way to go! WPPI is such a great thing for your business! I can’t wait to hear stories of how the week impacted all of YOU!

8. Hearing the NEW news!

We spent a few hours with the awesome founders behind Shoot Dot Edit, the BEST post process company ever! And ladies (and gents!), I’m excited to say that I got the newest scoop that you are going to LOVE! Shoot Dot Edit is now accepting a la carte orders! This means you don’t have to upload a wedding to have them color process your images! You can send them a 100 images from a Portrait Shoot, have them all color balanced, and only pay around $22! It’s INSANE!!! How can you beat that price! And I’m telling you, these guys care about your images as much as you do! We are proof of it! Yeah for the new A La Carte MENU!!! Check it out portrait ladies!

9. All Frozen Pea Jokes

…from my twitter and facebook status! Oh boy, Brian has such a great attitude! :)

10. Family!

We literally ended our time with seeing family! And that was the BEST way to end a great week! Brian’s sister, brother in law, and our niece live in Vegas b/c they are key players to the creative choreography in Le Reve, the Cirque Du Soleil show at the Wynn. Before we headed to the airport yesterday, we got to spend some precious hours with them. Not enough time, not enough. But it was such a wonderful, rich way to end our time! love you guys!

11. Coming Home Means…

We have two days and then we leave for TWO MONTHS to Thailand! Can you believe it?!! We leave with the kids on Saturday to start our adventure of Jungle School in Thailand! Ooooh, we are going to have fun on this blog over the next several weeks!

Honest to goodness, I think this was the best WPPI we’ve ever been too! Every year it gets better and better! Next year, you must be there! Big thanks to Bill, Skip, Shawna and all the those behind the scenes!!

p.s. I didn’t have as much time to follow your comments on the last couple posts. But I’m glad you all had fun with Brian’s “snip-snip” post. That was the talk of the show! :) And we’re all super excited about how the tuition and new Focus Groups meets your needs even more for the Discovery Workshop! Thanks for all the blog comments!

Big announcements for all of you still considering the Discovery Workshop this May!

Rick, Garrett and myself had a great phone conference a few days ago and made some exciting decisions.

First, we talked about how the economy has affected everyone. We looked at our numbers and found a way to tighten things up and keep the workshop price at the Early Bird Discount! This means we will NOT be raising the workshop price! The workshop tuition will stay at $1249 to help all of you who are waiting for your tax refunds. Yes, I got your sweet, sincere emails, and we hope this new decision helps. Our heart is to inspire all of you, especially with the heaviness of the economy. Never has there been a better time to get yourself filled up and refreshed.

The other big news is that we restructured the first day of the workshop. It’s still going to be a wonderfully rich day about Discovering the Artist Within (I can’t wait for you to experience what we’ve put together!). BUT, we have found a way to maximize the time that day even more to do special Focus Groups at the end of the day!

What’s a Focus Group? Basically, we are going to have six different small groups (ranging from 3-5 people). Each group will range in topics from Marketing (where I critique your website or blog and offer helpful marketing strategies), The Mechanics of Your Camera, Post Process Help, How to Technically Capture Beautiful Back Lit Photos, etc. The team figured out how to carve out 2 1/2 hrs. for these small groups so we could have you rotate and hit all topics. This way you get all your questions answered. AND, you feel ready for getting some great shots with our awesome models on Saturday and Sunday!

We’re really excited about fitting Focus Groups in to the first day. But we’re most excited about finding a way to keep the registration price down for you!

Now, one more thing!

I was looking at the names of those already signed up, and I noticed that many of you have not even met Rick Chapman or Garrett Burdick! We’re going to have them post a blog so you can get to know them better. But for now, check out their websites by clicking on their names!

To grab one of the last 10 spots (yes, there is only TEN left) in the Discovery Workshop, CLICK HERE!!!

We are excited to see you in May!!!

Brian had the Snip-Snip!

Yep, he did! And yep, I have to blog about it! :) Kari, my little freckled mama, I picture you just laughing as you read this! :)

But, we need to clear things up real quick!

This weekend I twittered on Facebook: Brian went under the knife and had the big V procedure for Valentine’s Day! oh, should I even be twittering this? couldn’t resist! :) .

The emails that flooded in from that one post had me almost peeing my pants. They were so funny! And yes, Brian was laughing too. Some of you guys emailed him things that you should be ASHAMED of–talk about LOCKER ROOM talk!

For the record, I didn’t have “any thing” done. Some of you ladies confused what I said. :) Naughty!

Instead Brian took a hit for the team and had the old “snip-snip”. Me and the kids took Brian to the doctor, and as we walk in Blaze announces to everyone around “I’m so glad I’m not going to have any thing done to MY penis!” Then he grabbed his penis and smiled wide. Yep, the whole experience was just…memorable.

But the best memory was Brian asking the doctor if he had ever had this V procedure done on himself. The doctor looked at him with a subtle smile and said, “Heck no. You kidding me? I’ll do the procedure, but I’m not going to have it done myself.” That’s when sweat started to drip down Brian’s face. :)

If your wondering how to find Brian…how to point him out in a crowd…he’s the one with the bag of frozen peas! :)

If you think this post is bad, and I’m a mean wife, your so wrong! I could totally be posting a picture of Brian dancing in his underwear, and I’m not!

Tomorrow’s blog post! Exciting, NEW news about the Discovery Workshop!!!

The news that I’ve been holding in since November is….(drum-roll!)

Our amazing, talented publicist got connected with the nationally recognized Woman’s World magazine! You know, the magazine that has over 1 million subscribers!

They put their heads together and came up with an idea: A BIG Camera Giveaway!

Woman’s World said they would run the contest in their magazine and point everyone to sign up on our website. They said to be prepared for around 10K submissions! (this is where I fall out of my chair as I get the news from our publicist!) Then Woman’s World asks if Sony would want to join in the fun.

We give Sony a call, and Sony doesn’t hesitate. They are so AWESOME! They jump right in. But here’s the thing. Sony not only offers one camera, but THREE, Sony Alpha 350 DSLRs with 14.2 Mega pixels, the Super Steady Shot Image Stabilization and lens!!!! The value of one camera is over $700!!

Three people have the opportunity to win one of these babies. And let me tell you, the A350 is an awesome camera! The color quality rocks. The adjustable, pop out, live preview on the back of the camera shows you how the light changes if you change your ISO or shutter speed.

And the settings are all on top which make it EASY to find things. Ask Brian, I have LOVED that camera since I first picked it up, and we get to give away THREE!

So seriously, tell ALL your friends and family to sign up by clicking LEARN MORE at our www.refusetosaycheese.com site!

Looks a little like this!

You have a chance to win one of these three bad boys! Each of the three winners will also get a copy of our popular DVDs, Refuse to Say Cheese and Beyond the Green Box!

But here is the last thing! Once you sign up for the camera giveaway, you will get an email that confirms your submission. In that email will be coupon codes for both the DVDs and the 101 Kits to get 20% off! Awesome Possum!

Because of you and all your input, things were different this year!

I have waited a whole year to try some of your great ideas. Do you remember us talking about this? I had posted last year about how hard my birthday and Valentine’s Day are b/c of painful trauma from my past. A number of you sent me emails and posted blog comments with your suggestions on how to change all that–how to not let my birthday be robbed on top of every thing else I lost. Your suggestions were wonderful, and like I said, I have waited a whole year to try them out!

So yesterday, I woke up, kissed Brian and the kids goodbye and drove north to meet one of my best friend’s from college. We had tea, walked around Green Lake, laughed, cried–it was perfect. Then I spent some time wandering through a few favorite shops, looking at books, and feeling the freedom of not having anywhere to be. For dinner, I met up with my three roommates and dearest friends from college, we made dinner together and had the best night.

In the past I’ve struggled with the idea of being gone all day b/c the kids are excited for mom’s birthday and want to celebrate with me too. But I think you all helped me see last year that I need to get out, be proactive at fighting old memories and surround myself with friendship. That is what I did. I took all your suggestions, created something new, Brian kissed me goodbye and off I went into my birth day. It was wonderful…and I couldn’t help but think it was largely because of YOU! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

And oh my goodness, thank you for the OVERWHELMING number of birthday wishes on Facebook and emails yesterday. I can’t imagine feeling more loved.

So are we having coffee tonight or what? :)

Don’t forget that tonight I’m doing a hour long interview on Sony’s Backstage 101 website! You can join us for free. But you have to sign up/register. Check out THIS LINK! You are welcome to join and ask me whatever you’d like. The last two interviews were full of such great questions. If you missed them, I hope you can make this one!

DATE: February 10th, TONIGHT!!!

TIME: 5-6pm PST / 8-9pm EST

One Day’s Road!

I read a quote yesterday that I must share. It spoke to me on several levels, and I’d love to hear what it says to you.

I always knew that one day

I would take this road but

Yesterday

I did not know today

Would be the day.

-Nacarjuna

Do you feel like you’ve had your today?

If not, share what your today would look like?

If your today is here, what does this quote say to you!
