Jen here with another First Year post…and we are heading to the beach to show off baby’s first Halloween costume!

Unlike many other new moms I’ve talked to, I did NOT have Logan’s first Halloween outfit picked out and bought way ahead of time. No, Halloween sneaked up on me this year. So when I saw the cutest mermaid costume on mega sale at our local Old Navy the week before Halloween, I snatched it up right away! Almost immediately, I thought of taking Logan to the beach for a few photos in her costume. Not only would the photos make her first Halloween costume extra memorable, but I would be capturing Logan’s first time touching the sand. I couldn’t wait!

We arrived to the beach to find fluffy, white clouds in a brilliant blue sky, calm waters and smooth sand – the perfect backdrop for our photos. I placed Logan on the sand, quickly got my camera settings and was anxious for the fun to begin. A few seconds later, Logan became transfixed on the sand. She ran her fingers through it, grasped it in her tiny hands, let it fall to the ground and grasped for more.

Sand…was awesome!

She tasted the sand a little because, well, you have to taste everything, right?

There was one particularly sweet moment when she discovered that her shadow friend had followed us from home to spend some time with us at the beach. She waved at it and watched it wave back. So adorable!

From the time she noticed the sand until we left fifteen minutes later, she never looked up from the sand at me. This first sand experience was serious business…and a darling one. Thank you, beautiful beach, for being a fabulous host to my sweet little mermaid. We hated to leave, but we’ll be back soon for more fun in the sun!
