Scholarship for a Photography Loving Mom

Me Ra Koh

Me Ra’s 2-Day Dallas CONFIDENCE Workshop is coming up quickly.  For the last seven years, she and Brian have had the opportunity to give numerous scholarships to moms who wouldn’t otherwise have the means to attend this special workshop.  But this scholarship isn’t for just any mom.  It’s a scholarship for a photography loving mom who is running on empty.  Do you know a mom running on empty?  If yes, keep reading!

It’s very common for each workshop to have a mix of total beginners AND paid pros from graduating seniors to young moms to published, paid women photographers to aspiring photo-loving grandmas.  Yet, no matter how diverse the group is all the women have one thing in common, they desire solid confidence in their photography.  That’s why Me Ra and Brian call this richly packed 2 days, the CONFIDENCE workshop.  But not only is there one spot left to register for, there is also a reserved spot for a special mom.  Me Ra and Brian have set aside a special scholarship seat for one woman.

If you are not familiar with this scholarship, read Me Ra’s description below and see what it’s all about!  Moms are one of the most beautiful, powerful people in our life. Note from Me Ra:

“In honor of how wonderful moms are and all that they do and give, Brian and I keep one spot reserved in (almost) every CONFIDENCE workshop for a special mom like YOU!  That’s right, you (or she) will get a free pass to the upcoming CONFIDENCE Workshop in the Dallas area!  This is a $1249 value, wrapped in a weekend of inspiration and creativity.  (Please note, we don’t provide room/board and travel.)

To nominate a mom, you must post a comment below telling us about the mom who you think deserves a big break in life! If you are a mom, you’re probably laughing because we ALL deserve a serious break. But the moms we’re looking for are the ones who have had a ridiculous amount of stress in their life whether from trauma or things just not going her way. She is a mom in your life that needs a serious blessing. She needs a serious surprise that gives her empty tank some fuel. If she is a woman that has miscarried, she is still a mom in my mind b/c I know her heart became a mother’s heart the moment she found out she was pregnant. Don’t hesitate to nominate her too.

I’m proud to say that some of our previous winners stepped out on a limb and nominated themselves. Take courage in them and feel free to nominate yourself if you know you need a serious break. Who knows, you may have your house remodeled Oprah!  Yep!  A previous winner went on to nominate her family’s story and home.  You never know what will happen when you put yourself out there.  And you are worth it.  You are worthy of all the goodness life has to give.  Let Brian and I bless you and your creative spirit with this special scholarship for photography loving mom.”

xoxo,

Me Ra

  1. I would like to nominate my good friend, Ashley Ward, of Geneva Mae Photography, in Lorain, Ohio, for your scholarship, please. I have known Ashley for four years, and have had the opportunity to work with her on several occasions. She is a very talented photographer. She is also the mom to 3 wonderful little ones, all under the age of 4.

Ashley is very gifted in her chosen profession. She is constantly learning and growing in her skills, so her business will flourish in turn. I feel she certainly deserves a personal break, and the development opportunities that your conference would provide her. I respectfully request your consideration of her nomination, please.

You may view more of Ashley’s work:

    • TASKINA RINTHI says:

I would like to nominate Posha Espie. She’s a single mother putting her son through private school, and doing it all on her own. She has an incredible passion for photography. She loves it which makes her work the best I have ever seen. Her dream is to become a professional photographer and do photography for Kohls clothing. With everything going on she has never given up on her dreams and her responsibility. Shes an amazing mother, friend and just overall an amazing person. She’d strives to always do her best in everything, juggling work, life and motherhood. I couldn’t think of a better person to nominate. She’s great at what she does and you can just feel how passionate she is about photography. She wants to further hee education and go back to school so this will really help her out alot. I feel like she’s the perfect fit and thats why I nominate her.

  2. Alissa Griffeth says:

I would like to nominate my friend Nancy Whitney. Nancy is a mother of 5 children, I think, I’ve lost count. Ha.

Nancy is a strong voice in the community, and the school district in our community. She has always volunteered at the schools of all of her children. By the time her last one is done in Elementary school she will have a combined 20 years of time in at the school. While volunteering to run fundraisers, parties, sports boosters all from elementary through high school she also volunteers in the community as well. AND while doing all of this she got her realtors license.

I honestly have no clue how she manages to do all of this. She is always looking for ways to better herself and there is not a challenge she won’t accept.

This scholarship would mean the world to her as she has decided to start trying to take on photography at the suggestion of friends.

Not only does Nancy do all of this for the community and the school district but she is always there for friends. As mom’s we don’t always have the right things to say and carry the guilt that comes with that. At one particularly had time in my son’s life Nancy had the completely right thing to say to turn around his outlook on the situation. I have been forever great full for that. It took what could have turned in to one of the most awful times in his life to just a ho hum moment.

I honestly have never known someone like her and she is the kind of woman I aspire to be

  3. Kathryn Michaud says:

Hi, I would like to nominate my sweet niece, Kellie Daly. She is a mom to her 2 bio daughters, 7 and 10 plus step mom to her husband’s older children, ages 13 and 15. She has been our family photographer for years and now that her girls are old enough she was hoping to get her photography business off the ground. Sadly, she’s had to put down her camera since May when she was diagnosed with advanced, terminal, stage 4 colon cancer at the incredibly young age of 34. She is now in the fight for her life and fighting she is doing! Her chemo has shrunk the tumors and her spirits and hope remains high. Your event is the week-end of my 46th birthday, and I can’t think of any other gift that would make me happier than to have her enjoy this week-end. God bless and thanks for considering her. Kathryn Michaud

  4. Kathryn Michaud says:

PS: I don’t know how to edit my post above but you can check out Kellie’s Facebook page at Kellie Daly Photography. And she’s local in DFW so travel is no issue. My email is valanmichaud@sbcglobal.net. Thank you again, Kathryn Michaud

  5. Kathy Dalton says:

I would like to nominate my sister, Emilie Cahoon, because she is LIGHT.

Isn’t that what photography is all about, light? Finding light in darkness, capturing light in a photograph and sharing our light with others.

Emilie is all these things to me.

Her smile lights up the room, her laugh is contagious and her eyes twinkle with joy. Emilie is the mother of three children under four. She serves her family, church and community with such love, laughter and light.

Like all of us, she needs time to fill the oil in her lamp so that it can continue to glow and shine. A month ago, she was seriously ill and had to go to the ER three times in a week. It was terrifying. At one point, we didn’t know if she’d make it. But she gotten better and been given another chance to share her love and light through photography.

Please consider my sweet sister for this scholarship.

  6. Kristen Bridgan-Brown says:

I would like to nominate my daughter, Haleigh Bridgan. She is a single, teen mom of a lively 15 month old little boy. Haleigh is incredibly talented with her photography skills and uses her photos to bless and encourage other teen moms she knows. She works hard to be independent and provide for her son and herself. When she was in high school, she was accepted into a local arts school to peruse her photography talents. Because of some health issues, she dropped out. When she decided to keep her son, she worked hard to obtain her GED before he was born. I once heard MeRah speak at a women’s event in our local church. Haleigh has very similar life experiences she has had courage to face and I would love to see her get away just to focus on her skills and dreams. It’s so easy to forget how to dream when one gets caught up in surviving. What an opportunity this would be for her! Thank you for this consideration.

  7. Jaremy Brown says:

I would love to nominate Haleigh Bridgan. She is a young mom of an awesome 1year old. She went to Tacoma’s school of the arts (sota) and want able to graduate. She worked really hard with her son and earned her GED. Now she’s enrolled to go for her associates but her passion and talent is photography. I did wedding photography for eighteen years, apprenticed under two pros that did it for over forty and her talent and natural gift surpass me in every way. I would love to be able for her to get this time to recognize her own skill and talent and be able to be encouraged and surrounded by women that have made it and are making it successfully in the photography business. Here is a small sampling of her work:

    Thank you for your consideration.

  8. Me Ra Koh says:

Thank you so much for all these beautiful nominations. Every nominee is so deserving, and it’s a gift to even hear their story.

The deadline is Friday, 9/11. Make sure you nominate a mom who fits the bill for this special scholarship. Brian and I would love to bless her. A group of past scholarship ladies will vote for who gets this. They are the most qualified group to vote knowing what it means to run on empty and need a weekend like this.

Make sure you email Janna, our workshop coordinator, at janna@fioria.us with your contact info so we know how to contact the winner.

And be sure to consider the location. This workshop is in Dallas, and we don’t provide room/board or airfare. This scholarship would ideally go to someone who is not burdened by these things and can easily attend.

    Much, much love,
    Me Ra

  9. Emilie Foss says:

The most deserving mom to receive this generous “Confidence Scholarship” is Kathy Dalton. Despite running on empty, Kathy makes time to live in the moment, serve her 3 young kids and her siblings, works to provide for her family, and dedicates time to her community and neighbors. She’s dedicated, hard working, positive, driven, and always learning.

Kathy could use this course to improve her blog photos “Go Adventure Mom,” which encourages families to get out in nature and for mom’s to be apart of their kids journey (not stuck behind screens).

Most important, Kathy is a loving mom who is always behind the camera trying to capture/freeze her kids lives.

Kathy has been a long-time fan of Me Ra Koh’s. I know this would be a dream come true for her. Please select Kathy Dalton for this adventure.

    Sincerely,

    Emilie Foss

  10. Lana says:

Ugh!! This is the hardest thing to do….
    But… I would like to nominate….me…
I am a mom of two. My oldest is in her junior year at college and my youngest is 16 and a sophomore in high school. Married to my husband of 23 years and one of my biggest supporters. Plus I only live 2 hours from Dallas so I could be there in a snap. 🙂
I have wanted to attend your workshop for quite a few years now. My love for photography began at a young age. I remember in about 6th grade we had to write a career essay on what we wanted to be when we grew up, mine was photographer. I begged and begged my mom for a camera and I got a red Canon Snappy for Christmas. I loved it and took pictures all the time and I had that camera until I got married and it got left somewhere on a mountain in Colorado. LOL. Through the years, I’ve been told “you really need to do this for people”. I love it, but I just don’t feel I have what it takes. I would love to if only I was better. I will when I learn more. I wish I was better. These are the things that run through my head when I hear “you should really do this”. Am I the only one who feels this way? Anyway, I feel your “Confidence Workshop” is exactly what would help me to at least see my photography in a different light. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship.
    Lana

  11. Mike McMullen says:

I would like to nominate my beautiful wife Michelle for the “Confidence Scholarship” . We bought her a Canon Rebel shortly before our son was born 3 years ago, and she has been steadily developing her skills ever since. We adopted a baby girl last year, who just turned 1 in August. As we only have one living parent, Michelle’s dad, who lives in Cleveland, she has not had a single night away from the kids in 3 years… She really deserves a break, and she is so passionate about her photography, this would make a wonderful vacation for her. Although she always plays it down, I think she has an amazing eye for composition, and she just needs a little confidence building to take her to the next level. I may be a little biased, but I could really see her doing this professionally.

I travel for work, so we have miles and hotel points to get her there from Colorado Springs.

Thank you for considering her for this great opportunity.

    Mike

  12. Andrea M. says:

I would like to nominate my dear friend, a true “photo loving mom”, Porsha Espie to receive the scholarship being offered to attend this year’s CONFIDENCE Photography Workshop. Porsha has been a single mother for about eight years and she is one of the most giving people I know. As long as I have known her, she has never let the stigma of single motherhood get her down. In fact, she has only thrived because of her circumstances! To her fault, Porsha gives so much of herself to her son, her job, and the rest of her family that she has not fully been able to tap into her true passions. Putting her son through private school and meeting the demands of her high paced job has resulted in her putting many of her dreams on hold including her photography. In light of this, I feel honored to appeal to you on her behalf for the nomination of this scholarship because this is an opportunity that is too close for her not to be able to reach it! I know she would be exceedingly grateful for a chance to participate in a workshop such as this, and I thank you for your consideration of her in regards to this amazing opportunity.

  13. Janna Curran says:

I know I speak for Me Ra when I say that we wish every person nominated, whether by friends, family or those who bravely stepped out and nominated themselves, could be the winner of the scholarship. Choosing the winner is no easy task. The truth is that not one woman is more deserving than another. Every single one is just as deserving as the next. That is why a whole team of women vote together on who will win. This is part of what is so beautiful about the Running On Empty contest. The team of women who are voting have all been winners. They are all the past Running on Empty winners.

I’m honored to share that the winner of the Running On Empty Scholarship is KELLIE DALY!!! Please take a moment to read her story up above (she was nominated by her precious Aunt, Kathryn.) Kellie, we’re so honored to be a part of your story, and we are so excited to have you join us this weekend!

I would like to say to all of those who were nominated, and for those who nominated someone, “THANK YOU!!” Thank you for taking a risk and for sharing your stories!

I’d also like to say THANK YOU so much, Me Ra, for your generosity and your heart to give to women!!

    With great warmth,
    Janna
Workshop Coordinator / Touchpoint for Me Ra (and former Scholarship winner)

  14. Lana says:

    Congratulations Kellie!!

  15. Michelle McMullen says:

    Congratulations, Kellie!
