I hope you all had a wonderful weekend of dressing up. We certainly did. Brian was causing the neighborhood women to swoon as Edward Cullen from Twilight. I promise to show images soon. It’s also been fun getting your Halloween photos and hearing how you put my Spooky Photo Tips to practice! I’ll try to post a handful of those too. But today I need to post something concerning this week.

Pictage’s Partner Conference, in New Orleans, kicks off tomorrow. Brian and I regret to say we will not be there.

We were so excited to come because Partnercon is one of our favorite annual conferences. We were excited to share on our topic, but even more excited to hang out with many of you, friends we only see once or twice a year. So what happened? Why the last minute cancellation?

When we were in NY last week, I felt like Pascaline was having a tough time. She didn’t seem like herself. I felt like she was struggling to feel grounded and having a hard time focusing. We did an unusual amount of travel in September and October. For some of the trips the kids joined us, and for a handful I went alone. We try to pace our calendar, but sometimes unexpected things come up and you need to get on a plane. Those unexpected events added up over the last two months, and I ended up being in six cities in October alone. When Photo Plus happened in NY, I could tell Pascaline was feeling the weight of our travel schedule.

Our kids are pretty amazing. They roll with the travel schedule in a way that blows my mind. In some ways they’ve never known any different, but it’s also because we have a ton of family support, the beauty of homeschool, and an awesome nanny. The kids will sometimes count the days until our next trip because of that special weekend their going to have with Grammie and Papa. But you know when that moment comes…and the air around you has shifted. The feeling around the moment is so abstract, so subtle, and yet it’s staring you, wide eyed in the face. And in that moment, you know your kids need you more today than most days. It isn’t traumatic, and if we left today for New Orleans, I know the kids would survive. But I feel deeply about the fact that life isn’t about surviving. Life is about much more.

Last Thursday, Brian and I went down to the local cafe and I asked him to consider canceling. Did he think I was off base or in left field? He was a bit taken off guard, but he heard me out. Then he looked at me and said, “We’ve built so much of this business by listening to your intuition. If you feel strongly about this, we should listen.” I felt so strong but so conflicted. I didn’t want to let our Pictage family down, and especially the wonderful photographers that were planning on attending our talk. And yet, as I sat on the decision, prayed about it, thought it through, what bothered me most was the idea of having to tell Pascaline I needed to leave again–knowing her spirit wasn’t ready yet for “again”.

What was equally troubling was if I didn’t listen to my instinct now, it would be that much tougher to listen the next time. I’ve worked so hard, for years, to listen that small voice, I couldn’t ignore it now.

The title of our talk was Revive the Artist in You: Live the Impossible Life. There is no way I could stand up and speak on this topic when I knew my little one needed me back home.

When I called Jim Collins, CEO of Pictage, he blew me away. He told me he would personally make himself available to anyone that had been referred from our blog. (So find Jim if you are there this week b/c he wants to meet you!) He asked me a couple other logistical questions, and then he said “Now Me Ra, I want you to take three deep breaths. We’re going to miss you, but we will get through…and I hate to break it to you, but your not Super Woman.” I have to tell you that I broke down in tears because I never expected Jim to be so understanding.

Our life is crazy and not in balance. That’s right “not” in balance. I gave up on balance a while ago because it only led me to compare my life with others–with other lives who weren’t anything like our own. And then I realized it’s not about living a balanced life, but living a life that listens to your small, quiet voice inside. Living a life of prayer and teamwork with Brian. Living a life that makes BIG plans but takes things one step at a time with prayer wrapped all around it. At times my fears and insecurities creep in. I don’t find a ton of women in my position, and I feel the need and desire to continue breaking ground. But I wonder if I’m kidding myself because maybe it would be easier on all of us if our family had mom at home and dad at work. I NEVER thought I would be a working mom—ever. But for some reason God had other plans for me and my family, and here we are. And it feels right. Not always easy, but right.

I do apologize to all of you who expected us to be there. Please email us if this unexpected news throws your conference off, and Jim and I will figure out a way to make it up to you. (mera@merakoh.com)

I want to thank Jim and the rest of the Pictage family for being so understanding. I feel more supported and loved by Pictage than ever.

After Brian and I made our decision, I told Pascaline I canceled my trip. Over the next few hours, I watched her body unwind. It’s like I could see her shoulders let down–her spirit exhale. On the way home yesterday, after her first piano recital, she said “Mama, I’m so glad your home this week.” I smiled inside. I can’t always cancel the trip. But this time, I knew I needed to. She needed me a little more than the average day. She would have survived if I had to go. But I’m so glad I didn’t ask her to survive. Instead, I get to love on her. I get to make homemade soup with her, take a walk in the Fall leaves, come home and light a fire, wrap her in my arms and let her know that in the midst of our exciting, crazy life–I hear my little girl.

I see her.

The weekend was a mix of resting, laughing and crying. My business coach has warned me several times about the aftermath I feel when a workshop has ended. I can’t help it. I’m a super emotional being, and when Brian and I spend the weekend pouring all our emotion and energy into the lovely, amazing women who attend our workshops–I usually have an emotional crash when it’s all said and done. I think touring the Smithsonian delayed this crash because boy, did it ever come.

But the toughest part is not the emotional crash. The toughest part is what I choose to believe in the moment. For instance, this weekend I did a handful of things to soak up “being home”. I rode my bike to the grocery store (and bought a bouquet of flowers for my basket just because). I took a nap in the middle of the day on Saturday. (I rarely nap.) I got the new homeschool curriculum organized. I was feeling good, even great at times. And then on Sunday later afternoon the tears came without warning. I slid down the fridge and just cried on the kitchen floor. No real reason. Just needed to cry. (anyone feel me out there?). I struggled with judging myself in that moment. ‘What a horrible mom I was being? How selfish? How this, How that. All things that don’t involve grace for myself. When in fact, tears are often a good sign for me, cleansing. But for some reason, I felt disappointment with myself.

I think I felt disappointment because I feel vulnerable these days–a little more vulnerable than I’m used to feeling. If you’ve read this blog for more than a week, you know that I’m pretty self disclosing. Heck, if you’re reading today’s blog you know that. But there are shifts in the air. Shifts in the weather, shifts in our family routine, shifts in our business-some bigger than I have had experience with. And the question that lurks behind all the shifts are “Will these shifts fail on us? Will we fail the shift? Will we come out on the other side fulfilled and glad we took the risks or feel the exact opposite?”

Aside from the shifts in the weather, I feel very invested in all the shifting around me. Brian and I put our heart into a creative family makeup where homeschooling, family life and traveling somehow work together (some days being better than others). We also put our heart into our dreams and our business. I have a dream ladies–a big dream. I want my own TV show. I want a show that reaches out to women and mixes photography and inspiration. I’ve even spent the last several weeks writing a 40 page TV Treatment proposal. It’s amazing how you find pockets of time on the airplane, or late at night when everyone is in bed, hammering the words out, hammering your dreams out–and how it all somehow energizes you.

I’m submitting the Treatment, putting the feelers out. And all this makes me feel naked in an open field. When you put your heart into anything, it seems the fear of failure only grows by the second. So what do you do? Where do you go when your aware of the fear more than the excitement? How do you escape the judge that sits on your shoulder, while you cry on the kitchen floor, telling you that your in no shape to ever have your own TV show?

I have a stack of books on my writing desk. They are a collection of my favorite authors over the years. Last night, I found myself going back to their words and their wisdom. I stumbled upon an excerpt that I thought you’d enjoy too. The book is called Circle of Quiet by Madeleine L’engle (author of A Wrinkle in Time). I had the privilege of taking a workshop from her. She has since passed away, and she will never know how much her honesty has impacted my life over the years. In this excerpt she writes about having her book The Lost Innocent rejected again;

“This (the rejection) seemed an obvious sign from heaven. I should stop trying to write. All during the decade of my thirties I went through spasms of guilt because I spent so much time writing, because I wasn’t like a good New England housewife and mother. When I scrubbed the kitchen floor, the family cheered. I couldn’t make a decent pie crust. I always managed to get something red in with the white laundry in the washing machine, so that everybody wore streaky pink underwear. And with all the hours I spent writing. I was still not pulling my own weight financially.

So the rejection on the my fortieth birthday seemed an unmistakable command: Stop this foolishness and learn to make cherry pie.

I covered the typewriter in a great gesture of renunciation. Then I walked around and around the room, bawling my head off. I was totally, unutterable miserable.

Suddenly I stopped, because I realized what my subconscious mind was doing while I was sobbing: my subconscious mind was busy working out a novel about failure.

I uncovered the typewriter. In my journal I recorded this moment of decision, for that’s what it was. I had to write. I had no choice in the matter. It was not up to me to say I would stop, because I could not. It didn’t matter how small or inadequate my talent. If I never had another book published, and it was very clear to me that this was a real possibility, I still had to go on writing.

I’m glad I made this decision in the moment of failure. It’s easy to say you’re a writer when things are going well. When the decision is made in the abyss, then it is quite clear that it is not one’s own decision at all.”

Madeleine L’engle knew she had to write. I know I am meant to dream big. Ever since I was little, despite the many pains of my childhood, I knew I was meant to shoot for what others might say is impossible. The tears on the kitchen floor don’t get to weigh in as evidence of this being true or not. The decision was made long ago in my own abyss. I just needed a tearful, cleansing reminder of it.

Thanks for reading today friends. Today I feel selfish because I feel like I’m using your listening ear to process this next step. Today I feel grateful for you listening. Does this resonate with any of you and the season of life that you are in?

xix, Me Ra

p.s. To all my Minneapolis women…counting the days! xix

We had our Washington DC CONFIDENCE Photography Wkshp this last weekend. It was awesome! All twenty women showed up with a hunger to improve their photography skills, and it was a honor to work with them. Before the workshop even started these women were encouraging each other via emails. I can’t wait to see what comes out of them because of the supportive circle they have already formed.

Brian and I are still in DC with the kids for one more day visiting the Smithsonian. But we wanted to post some quick Behind the Scenes images from the CONFIDENCE Wkshp!

Blaze and Pascaline jumped in on prepping for the workshop. The night before the workshop started, they set up all the tots for the women. They completely took charge of stuffing the tots with goodies. I was super proud of them. I love that we homeschool them so they can experience being a part of all this. (To the DC women, thank you so much for the card you gave Pascaline and Blaze! They were totally surprised and loved it! It was so thoughtful of all of you.)

(and because I know the DC women want to know…the Photo Recipe is…an ISO at 3200, Aperture 2.8 and Shutter Speed was 1/30th (or 30) of a second.)

The Meet and Greet on Friday night was at the Firefly restaurant that is connected to the Hotel Madera. I think 98% of the group showed up! It was amazing! Some of the women jumped right in, and we started teaching on different ways to capture night shots.

(Photo Recipe: ISO 3200, Aperture 2.8 and Shutter Speed was down to 1/4 of a second. Love the Image Stabilizer inside the Sony Camera Bodies!)

There are MORE Behind the Scenes shots to come tomorrow! But for now, we are headed back to the Smithsonian!

A BIG THANK YOU to all the ladies who attended!

Brian and I are so proud of the many shifts that happened in your photography, your outlook on life, your creativity and especially your CONFIDENCE. When the workshop ended Sunday night, Brian and I went and had a two hour dinner, processing the weekend together. Words cannot express how honored we feel to be a part of your lives. Just remember 3 1/2 seconds is all you need to ensure ultimate success! :)

Love you all! Me Ra and Brian

Good lord! I promised myself that I wasn’t going to blog this morning until later because our last twenty four hours have been insane. Get home with Brian Tuesday night, repack and add all the kids clothes yesterday (opted to stay in PJ’s all day–no other way to dress when you have one day at home in two weeks), grab the kids-say goodbye to the dog and cat-and catch a 7am flight to Washington DC this morning. (I’m dying to meet all the Washington DC Workshop ladies!!! Can’t wait!!)

So I told myself, get your stuff together and then blog. You know…stuff like packing the kids clothes, the workshop materials, the camera gear, the shampoo, the snacks, the homeschool books, the…the…oh yeah, the name tags for the workshop, the products, the handmade folders, the snacks–did I pack the snacks?, the…the…..just that kind of stuff. :) But in the midst of it all, I got on line to see how the #SonyMom conversation is going on Twitter, and I just cracked up laughing! The #SonyMom conversations were going CRAZY! I had to share with you. You are going to LOVE these links. Grab a cup of morning coffee and enjoy!

Mommy Pie did the most hilarious captions on her photos of the SonyMom event. I could not stop laughing! (Girl, you are brilliant!) I took this from her blog because this was one of my favorite moments. When we were doing the Sony Lot tour, this guy told us where we could find Cameron Diaz and Seth Rogan, but he said we never heard it from him. :)

SonyMom Blog Post

And if you have a chance, check out her AMAZING homegrown, organic dream to help moms find clothes for their kids for FREE! It’s called SwapMamas, and moms can log on and see if anyone has clothes that are the right size for their kids and then swamp with another mom. I’m serious ladies, you have to check out this brilliant service that Mommy Pie has created. It’s pretty much free, except for the shipping cost of swapping clothes. Brilliant, isn’t it!

The amazing producer and mommy blogger, The GoToMom, has already posted two videos. ALREADY! Kim even got Mr. T’s to say a few words, and it’s not “I pity the fool!”. :) I mean just look at her website header photo below. Does this woman not have the best sense of humor or what?! I love that they dressed up like Wally and Beaver for a photo shoot! So funny!

Sony posted on their blog, check it out HERE.

But ladies, do you want to join the SonyMom conversations on Twitter? The tweets are fun! If you do, log on to Twitter and do a search for #SonyMom. When you post your own tweets, if you put #SonyMom somewhere in your tweet message, your message will be added to the conversation. And you will be sharing your tweets and chatting with us all! It’s called a “Hash Twitter”. Did you know about Hash Twitters? One of the many things I learned from these awesome Mommy Bloggers. So come join us! We’d love to have you! These women are so approachable, I’m telling you, you’ll love them. AND FYI for Jeramy, you don’t have to be a mom to join. ;) ( We got your back friend.)

Okay, now to catch our FLIGHT! See you in DC!

The NEW January Seattle CONFIDENCE Workshop goes live at 6am tomorrow! See you here bright and early!!

Meet little Chloe. She is a doll! Would it help if you saw the Before and After of an image I process? If yes, keep going. I’ll walk you through what I do. As Tracey said, it will be “Me Ra-ease” :) , so you can try this too!

This is obviously the AFTER image (after I’m done processing the image in Adobe Lightroom).

How to Post Process an Image in Lightroom w/ Me Ra Koh

This is the BEFORE image. This is the image straight out of the camera.

Post Processing Images in Lightroom w/Me Ra Koh

What do I do in Lightroom? What are the Six Time Saving Steps to my Post Process? If you’ve attended one of our CONFIDENCE workshops, you know that I don’t like fussing over images–takes to much time away.

First, I make sure the color balance is good (her skin looks good, the pinks look true, etc). Then I step back from the image (in my mind’s eye) and decide what the story is for this image. The image of Chloe is about Chloe’s confident eyes. She’s looking right into the camera, unafraid and totally engaged. This tells me she is bold and spirited. Even the pucker in her lips confirms it. This is the story that I want to draw out in the image. So I adjust toning in Lightroom to draw out her eyes. I want the viewer to be struck by her eyes more than anything else. Thus, I need to tone down anything that could distract us from her eyes. For example, the pink shirt and yellow mat below her.

All I did was lower the saturation. This means I removed some of the color so that it’s not a full black and white but has more of a vintage color. A full black and white would be a little to serious for me with this image. Then I raised the level of Contrast for an added sharpness to her eyes. I raised the Blacks a tad to add a little more impact to the Contrast. And last, I added a Vignette so the edges of the image would fade into a blacker type color. And that is it.

Post Process Made Easy with Me Ra Koh and Lightroom

If you counted with me, that is SIX. Six is it. I put in a few pink arrows below so you know where to locate these steps in Lightroom.

1. Color Balance (or Temperature) looks good out of the camera

2. Identify the Story of the Image

3. Lowered the Saturation

4. Add Contrast

5. Up the Blacks a little

6. Add a Vignette (to add a Vignette, scroll down farther in Lightroom and you’ll see the Vignette scale)

Sometimes I don’t even lower the saturation. I just up the brightness, up the contrast and add a vignette. The post process tends to be within six time saving steps, or even less!

Why am I sharing this? I want you to fall more in love with photography! I want you to continue to fall in love with the stories of your kids that are unfolding around you on a daily level. I want you to know that you don’t have to own and understand Photoshop to be an amazing photographer with amazing images. Photoshop is not what makes an image amazing. You are what makes an image amazing b/c you spotted the moment and captured it.

We have two enemies when it comes to our photography. One is our own critic within. We talk about shutting that guy up a lot around here in the Personal Reflections category. The second enemy is Post Process. Instead of finding ways to grow our passion for photography, we grow our hours behind the computer doing post process.

Let me set the stage for what my life used to look like. I used to be big into Photoshop and Actions that change your image in a trillion different ways. But this is what happened. After a full day, bedtime prayers were finally said. It was almost 9:30pm, and I was exhausted. I got on my computer to start working on images, and somehow I got stuck for the next FIVE maybe SIX hours. And more than not, I had been stuck on ONE, TWO, maybe THREE FREAKING images. Tweaking it here. Tweaking it there. Trying this Action out. Trying that Action out. Hyper focused on a single image, bent over my computer at 1am, and pity the Brian who tries to have a conversation with me. The result was traumatizing to Brian.

Does that picture ring a bell with anyone? :) Seriously ladies, I have two active kids, we homeschool, I have a demanding business, dinners to make, groceries to buy and a dog to run, I don’t have time to deal with TWEAKING IMAGES a little here and a little there–especially when I’m the only one who will ever notice that I raised the Contrast by two more points! Can I get an AMEN!

Enter Adobe Lightroom. It walked into my life a couple years ago. I ignored it (in a snooty way) at first because Photoshop was “much more” familiar (as anything would be after that many late nights). But then I finally gave Lightroom a try and couldn’t believe how much easier and faster my post process could go! I could make my images without having to mess with Actions, Flattening an Image, Layering, Gaussian Blurs, etc. etc. (I’m getting dizzy!).

Nope. None of that anymore. Me Ra is now in bed around 10:30 or 11pm so she can get up to write her morning pages or blog, then heads to the gym by 6:45am. Me Ra is much, much happier.

So all that to say, don’t let the second enemy kill your passion for photography. Add a little contrast to make the colors pop a tad more. Add a Vignette to bring more focus to your story. Maybe lower the saturation for a vintage look, but then LOVE the moment of what you caught and walk away. Walk away from the post process trap and head to bed so you have more to give to your kiddos, husband, clients, and most importantly, yourself.

I would love to know if this post was helpful; seeing the BEFORE and AFTER and showing you what I changed in Lightroom. Would it be helpful to see more of these in the future?

p.s. If you are a wedding or portrait photographer and buried in post process, try out Shoot Dot Edit. They now handle the post process for our weddings, and they have been great. Worth looking into if you’re buried. If nothing else, their website cartoon is hilarious b/c of how true it is!

We’ve had a crazy week. Good on so many levels. But crazy too.

We got home from camping late Sunday night. I did a speaking engagement Monday night. We were out Tuesday night. Our house was full of 63 people for the Pictage gathering on Wednesday night. Family from out of town arrived yesterday and today is Friday. phew.

This week and next week are two consecutive weeks that we’re home, and I had all these goals. Organize my office, once and for all! Every wedding season the same thing happens, by the end, it’s chaos as we’ve been going hard all summer. How about organizing the craziness under our bathroom sinks? That’s another thing I want to tackle. Or, transplant some flowers in my garden. Bills? That is one for sure. Ugh, bills. Order Pascaline and Blaze’s homeschool materials. Start gearing up for 3rd grade. The list goes on and on. It’s like we have two weeks at home, and I think I’m Wonder Woman and want to catch up on everything. When all my body really needs is some serious down time and rest. So is that part of the game–to travel this much means your bathroom cupboards may never be organized?

I must admit…I feel pretty wiped today. And then I stumbled upon a gift last night. While I was working on a new Amazing Mom Feature, which I’m so excited to share, I came across this slideshow at Garrett Burdick’s blog. I don’t know how I missed this back in May! But I did! It’s a slideshow that Garrett did from our 3 day, intensive Discovery Workshop. I watched it and tears ran down my face. The slideshow brought back all the wonderful memories from that weekend; focusing on nurturing the artist within, digging deep, stretching the creative spirit, and not being afraid of the results.

If you haven’t seen the Discovery Workshop slideshow, check it out. The song that Garrett chose is perfect. (Awesome job Garrett. Man, we miss you guys!)

I love the Fall, and I can feel it approaching. The early morning air is just a little colder than it’s been. But change is also never easy for me. Anyone relate? It’s as if I need to be a little more intentional about nurturing myself as the upcoming changes pass through our family and my heart. And of course, I need to let the bathroom cupboards go!

Are you feeling change in the air? How do you deal with change? Are you feeling the pressure to organize your life before the new school year starts? What is one thing, like bathroom cupboards, that you can let go of?

much warmth,

Me Ra

I’m really excited about this week’s blog posts! Some of you may not know this, but I draft up ideas for each week to make sure there is a good flow to the blog’s overall week. I try to think about what types of posts we should have, what types we haven’t done in awhile, and most of all, what all of YOU want. The drafting process works well if I stay open to it changing at the last minute, like a baby bird taking it’s First Flight.

As I’ve been drafting this week’s posts, I notice the week has a lot of highlighting YOU! I LOVE this! Many of you have been working so hard at flapping your wings, and I love that I get to highlight some of your hard work and courage on through today’s post and the the upcoming Five Photo Contest Finalists!

Remember the fun blog post last week on Bubbles? Well, a ton of you emailed me your bubble images. It was AWESOME! I wish I could share them all, but I had to narrow them down. Get ready for some inspiring shots taken by women just like you, and don’t forget to check out their wonderful blogs/websites!

Jennifer sent me this sweet photo. Can’t you smell summer when you look at this? I love the baby’s bare feet, the curious focus on the escaping bubbles, and the amazing garden in the background. Is that a white picket fence?! Jennifer, is this your baby and your garden? Adorable baby! Great job! If it is your garden, what’s your secret!

I love this blog title: FIMBY: Fun In My Backyard! Isn’t that the BEST blog title! Renee is the artist behind this blog and just looking at her bio picture makes me fall in love with her! From her blog, it looks like she’s a Vegan, Homeschooling mama, and she’s capturing the story of her kids through photography. How can you not be inspired by her! :) I liked how Renee captured the beautiful back light in her daughter’s hair and the bubbles. GREAT JOB Renee! See more of Renee’s bubble photos here!

The image below was taken by Stephanie in Honolulu at her nephew’s birthday party! I love ALL the action and motion happening at once. The look in this little guy’s eyes is priceless. And then you have the sweet little girl in the background. It’s as if each child is in their own magical world. The frame is full with wonder! Stephanie, did you get down low when you shot this image? It looks like you shot it from the hip? What a great angle b/c the kids fill up the frame even more. And your blog, oh my goodness! I got a look at your work last night and freaked out! Your photography is gorgeous! So excited for our blog readers to see your art!

Bubble Photos by Me Ra Koh Moms

Aileen! Thank you for sending me your bubble images! They are fantastic, and I had to share this one especially! The moment you captured is well done on so many levels! For starters, the colors in the bubble, the way you framed the little girl in the bottom corner, the softness of her hand, it’s all so WONDERFUL! Is this your daughter? I didn’t see a blog or website in the email you sent. If you have one that you’d like to share, please do in today’s comments! Thank you so much Aileen for sharing! FYI: Aileen said they used “Miracle Bubbles” to make this happen. I know some of your inquiring minds were wondering about this. :)

Bubble Photos by Me Ra Koh Moms

Tara Bradford, author of the Paris Parfait blog sent this image to me. She captured this when walking down the streets of Amsterdam. I instantly fell in love with the image! The sharp red tones, the abundance of bubbles, the surrounding architecture and the absence of who the bubble blower is. The image is simply wonderful. And wait till you see the Paris Parfait blog! You must read Tara’s bio too! She is another fascinating, inspiring woman! I even had the privilege of meeting her last year when I spoke at the BlogHer Conference. She is now living in Paris finishing a novel and two photography books. Can you imagine! Sounds so dreamy! At least we can follow her blog and live vicariously through her. Thank you Tara for sharing your image! The composition caught my eye right away!

These last two images did a great job of capturing the sheer joy kids express with bubbles! Kristy is the talented photographer. Her website is totally worth seeing! It’s called Forever Captured Images. You MUST see the photo for her Contact page! It’s the BEST Contact page photo I have ever seen! Beautiful work Kristy! Thank you so much for sharing with me, and the rest of us!

Thank you so much for ALL the wonderful emails regarding our interview with FOLIO. I’m so glad it sparked excitement, inspiration and most of all, healing, in so many of you. The stories Brian and I shared about our past, raising the kids, homeschooling, travel, building a brand–it all comes from a place that I call “Impossible Hope”. We have both faced so many impossible mountains to climb, and yet here we are in this blessed place, and believe me we’re still climbing–but what a honor to climb alongside all of you!

I know that understanding your camera can feel like an impossible task sometimes. With the weekend around the corner, I thought it would be fun to give you a photo exercise that helps make that BIG, BLACK THING feel more enticing…more irresistible!

This photo exercise is all about Setting. It was inspired by one of Blaze’s recent blanket forts. If you remember from our DVD, Refuse to Say Cheese, I love the story telling element of Setting. We are sometimes so caught up in catching the action of the story or the character that we forget to capture WHERE the story took place. I’m sure all kids have a favorite setting if not multiple settings. Our kids set up their own offices, storefronts in the living room and especially forts made of sheets and blankets.

Blaze was so precious in this moment, I had to capture it. Time seems to standstill when I look at this image of him.

Me Ra Koh Photography, Portraits of Kids

For all my Photo Recipe lovers, here we go!

I shot this image with the Sony A900 camera body, and the 24-70mm lens–the lens that I affectionately call my “Work Horse” b/c of how versatile it is. If you want to know more about what is in my camera bag, you can read Part I and Part II on what type of gear you want and why.

The aperture/fstop was 2.8. The 24-70mm lens can’t go lower than a 2.8, but that is plenty low to get the blurry background and blasted out window light.

So how did I blast out the window light? Did I run over to the window with a light meter and measure the light? Heck no!! I don’t own one of those and don’t want to. It would only be another thing to take through security at the airport. :)

I love to keep things simple. And this “blasting out the window light” is easy my friends. It requires going into Manuel, but you can do it.

Put your camera in Manuel, adjust your fstop/aperture to it’s lowest setting and then just take the shot. Who cares where the Shutter Speed is at, just take the shot and see what you get.

My Shutter Speed was an 80th of a second for the above image. If my image had been to dark, then I would need to SLOW my Shutter Speed down so more light could come in. If my image had been to bright, then I would have needed to SPEED my Shutter Speed up to let less light in. I know Manuel freaks some of you out, but take a deep breath and take a shot of your kids in their favorite setting, and then adjust your Shutter Speed until the light is just right.

Remember, unless you have the Super Steady Shot feature in the Sony camera body or an image stabilizer lens, you won’t be able to go slower than a 60th of a second without having motion blur from your hands. How do you fix that? Bump up your ISO up to get more light.

To get the window light to blast out like it did behind Blaze, you just need to slow your shutter speed down more and more until the blasted window light is right where you want it. Play with the light. Play with your Shutter Speed. Experiment. Give yourself freedom to take images that are to dark or to bright. It’s the only way to find what you want.

To learn more about setting your camera’s Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO, check out our DVD, Beyond the Green Box! And to learn more about the Story Telling elements of photography, like Setting, check out our DVD, Refuse to Say Cheese! Both DVDs won Gold Awards recently from a national parenting contest! We know you’ll love them too! Or, if your feeling like you REALLY want to treat yourself, you can grab one of our last open seats in the upcoming Washington DC CONFIDENCE workshop!

Thanks so much for all the anniversary salutations! You guys are the BEST! Brian and I had a fun night out, and Kim Totten, you’d be happy to hear that he made me laugh most the night! (And Happy Belated birthday sweetie!)

After posting our interview yesterday with FOLIO, I thought you’d get a kick out of seeing the homeschool thing in action. Yep, this is where our classroom ends up being some times–the airports. :) We do what we got to do, right?!

With how much we travel, homeschool has become the glue that keeps us anchored as a family. It’s not for everyone by any means, but it is our secret sauce to making this creative lifestyle work for all four of us. Check out the interview to hear more about intentional choices we’ve made with our business and family!

(p.s. Those are my grandparents off to the side. They came with us to our Secret Sony Project and helped with the kids. They also thought it was great to see the great-grandkids doing spelling tests and World History at the airports in between flights. :) )

Out of curiosity, what are your special habits or rituals that act as the glue for your family? Would love to hear! All of you women amaze me with your tips and tricks!

And one quick question for women in Minneapolis…

We would love to bring our CONFIDENCE workshop to you, but you’ve got to help us. Genie and I are not familiar with the area at all. Can anyone make suggestions on where to hold the workshop? We would need a space for 20 women, where we could have lunch catered, and preferably a quaint setting–maybe connected to a hotel for room discounts too. Post your ideas if you don’t mind! Thanks so much!

First, to all the women and men who bravely commented on yesterday’s post “Digging for Gold: Steps to Branding Your Business”–thank you. Your vulnerability and true expression of where life has you–was incredibly touching to read. I can’t tell you what a blessing it was to read every entry. Thank you from the deepest place of my heart.

And yes, you read the today’s title right! If you live in or near DC, we’ve decided to bring the workshop to you this Fall!

Photography Workshop for Women in DC

We are in the midst of hammering out details like; where to hold the workshop and what weekend to hold it on. But what we know for sure is that we’ll be doing the workshop in mid September. So start looking at your calendars, the workshop will happen in September (probably mid September).

Also, if you know DC well, and you have ideas on where to hold a workshop for twenty women (and Brian) feel free to post your tips in the comments of today’s post and/or email us your tips! Email Genie at genie@merakoh.com. We would love to get your input, especially since I’ve never been to DC before (can you believe it? so weird!) We’re definitely bringing the kiddos and planning to stay a few extra days to visit the sites–a serious homeschool adventure! If you’ve stayed in a hotel that you LOVE, let us know! We’re all ears on putting the details for the DC Workshop together.

In regards to the space we’re looking for…somewhere that is open and inviting. We try to stay away from traditional hotel banquet rooms. Sometimes we rent out B&B’s, use museum classroom space, etc. If you know of a creative location for the workshop (2 day weekend), do tell. And FYI, we’ll probably be looking for a handful of baby models/kid models for the live photo shoots. Something to think about. :)

We will release the details and Early Bird Registration of $799 (regular price is $999) next week! So talk to the hubbie this weekend (maybe Saturday since Sunday is Father’s Day :) ), GET EXCITED, pinch yourself because it’s really happening, tell your girlfriends, and Stay Tuned!

If you don’t live anywhere near DC, don’t be discouraged. We are trying to fit another workshop into our Fall/Winter schedule. So you stay tuned too!

Can I hear a YIPPEE from all my future DC attendees!

(And yes, we’ll be bringing all the goodies (gift certificates galore!) that the Seattle women received. More to come on that!)
